World's Largest Flower
Did you know that the largest flower in the world measures up to 3 feet (1 meter) across? "Rafflesia arnoldi", native to rainforests of Indonesia is a parasitic plant. It lives inside a host plant - grape, Tetrastigma. It has no visible roots, stems or leaves and emerges only once a year, producing large, smelly blooms that smell like rotting flesh. However, to everyone's surprise, Rafflesia arnoldi is closely related to the plants that are famous for their pleasant fragrances: passion flowers, violets, poinsettias and other and other members of Malpighiales order. |
