Winter-Hardy, Draught-Resistant Cacti
Some master gardeners proved that cacti can - not just grow in hot, dry climates, but thrive as far north as in U.S. zone 4. That’s why these are called Winter-Hardy Cacti. John Spain from Connecticut is one of those visionaries. He has a nationally renowned outdoor cactus collection. He grows around 100 different cactus plants and many varieties of yucca all over his 1-acre yard, including in his rock garden. Spain insists that “Winter-hardy cacti are often alpine plants. They are collected along with gentians.” Some of the Winter-Hardy cacti varieties: • Yucca • Prickly pear (native to Florida) • Echinocactus • Opuntia fragilis • Opuntia polyacantha • Opuntia macrorhiza v. pottsii • Opuntia zuniensis • Echinocereus richenbachii v. baileyi • Sempervivum ‘Firebird’ (hens and chickens) • Pediocactus • Cylindropuntia (cholla) Cacti require good drainage and prefer sandy soil or gravel, mixed with peat moss and rotted manure. Mulch around cacti with an inch of peat gravel. Cacti are mostly grown – not for thorns – but for probably the most astounding (and short-lasting) blooms in the kingdom of flowers. Blooms last anywhere from only a few hours and up to four days. According to Spain, many identification guides don’t even list the color of the bloom since it may vary from plant to plant. Since even the thornless cacti have tiny barbed hairs (glochids) and the gloves don’t work as protection, use tongs for handling. By the way, cacti can also be grown from seeds. And the best part is – no watering is required. Except when establishing a new plant.
