Super-Strength Poison Ivy
Urushiol is the name of the oil, produced by poison ivy. It causes itchy red, blistery skin rash. Most people are at least somewhat sensitive to urushiol. According to “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA” (June 13, 2006), the plants of poison ivy are nowadays producing much more potent oil than in the past and – they are growing a lot faster than ever before. Some researchers are concerned about the rising concentration of CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere due to the burning of oil, gas and coal, and deforestation. The plants use CO2 gas as a raw material (besides water) for photosynthesis and increased levels of carbon dioxide might be the cause of the thriving of more potent, super-strength poison ivy.
