Slovenia - History and Facts
Slovenians Westernmost Slavic nation, Slovenians (used to be called Slovenes) have all throughout the history been much more a part of Central Europe than Balkan, geographically and culturally. Some significant communities of Slovenians outside Slovenia live in Austria, Italy and (smaller) in Hungary. A former republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has been independent since 1991 but still gets confused quite often with Slovakia and sometimes Slavonia, which is a Croatian region. Earliest History While the official history claims that Slovenia was settled between 568 and 650 A.D., there also exists a group of historians who believe that Slovenians are descendants of the people who predate the Romans, called Veneti, Vendi or Wends. At the dawn of Slovenians' known history they relished a brief period of independence during which they developed a form of representative democracy, well known to many leading personalities, including Thomas Jefferson. In his "Catholic Historical Review", Harvard historian Crane Brinton states that this ancient Slovenian democracy was a variable which "went into the making of modern Western institutions." Slovenians, Bavarians, Avars and Franks In alliance with Bavarians, Slovenians defeated warlike Avars in 743 A.D. Unfortunately, at the same time the independence of northern Karantanian Slovenians was lost because Bavarian allies refused to leave. Just another year or two later, Franks subdued Bavarians. Around that time Slovenian Prince Kocelj mysteriously disappeared and Slovenians of Pannonia were all of a sudden under the rule of Frankish overlord (874 A.D.). All in all, Slovenians were ruled by their more powerful neighbors (Bavarians, Franks, Holy Roman Empire, Austrian Empire) for more than millenium - and survived... Capital and Official Language The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana, a very dynamic Central European city with population of about 300,000 and situated on the natural passage between Central Europe, Mediterranean and East. Its climate is continental. The city is charming and has much to offer in many respects. The official language is Slovenian, also one of the official languages in the EU. Geography & Climate Only one third of Slovenia is flat, called the Pannonian Plains. Most of the country is located in the Alps. Climate: ~Mediterranean along the Adriatic Sea ~Continenetal or Central European in the Plains ~Alpine in the mountains Slovenia is bordering to the: ~Italy - west ~Austria - north ~Hungary - east ~Croatia - south
