Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D
It is well known that (besides genetics), living further from equator increases your risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). Accordingly, MS is rare in tropics, subtropics and Asia. That knowledge (how the lack of exposure to sunlight and consequential vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for MS) exists since 1922. One study showed that enough exposure of uncovered skin to sunshine reduced the rate of death from MS by 76 percent. The best prevention for MS is getting plenty of sunshine (to optimize vitamin D levels). When/where this is not possible, the only safe form of vitamin D – high quality vitamin D3 is an alternative (but the levels should be checked on a regular basis to avoid overdosing). One more possibility for “sun exposure” and optimal levels of vitamin D is the use of safe tanning bed, the kind that has potentially dangerous electromagnetic fields and X-rays eliminated.
