Lotus Effect
Botanist Wilhelm Barthlott (University of Bonn, Germany) discovered back in 1982 that the leaf of lotus plant was naturally self-cleaning and water-repellent. Waxy surface causes water to bead, roll away and gather dirt as it goes. Under the name of Lotus Effect, discovery was soon patented by Barthlott. This patent found its commercial use in biomimetic paint Lotusan and some other products. Lotusan paint is infused with microbumps with the same role as waxy microstructures and nanostructures of the lotus leaf. They angle with water, cause water to repel and at the same time the biomimetic coat of paint keeps the surface stain-resistant for decades. |
