Leopold Layer Slovenian Brezje
By Larry Zaletel
In my visit to Slovenia this summer, one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places we visited was Brezje. The church, with the beautiful picture of "Marija Pomagaj" (Mary of Help) by artist Leopold Layer, is located in the beautiful village of Brezje in the Slovenian Gorenjska Region. Brezje is a typical small village in Gorenjska under the Karavanke Alps. It is about 4 to 5 kilometers from Radovljica and about 60 kilometers from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Brezje is located amid the picturesque hill farms where ancient fruit trees stand all around. The village is like so many in Slovenia with about a dozen or so homesteads. The church is a place of peace, love and hope and originated with a chapel of St. Vitus. It is mainly known for the painting of Mary with the Christ-child. Miracles began happening in front of the painting in the 19th century, which is why the church became a well known pilgrimage center. Many prayers in front of what became known as "Slovenian Queen" Mary's painting, were answered since 1863 as more and more pilgrims came from everywhere to Brezje. The chapel at this popular destination became way too small by 1889. Expansion became crucial. The building was then rebuilt as it stands today and was consecrated in 1900. In 1988, the Pope John Paul II conferred the honorary title of basilica upon the church of Brezje. In 1966 he visited Brezje and since then several U.S. presidents and their wives have also been there. In |

Europe is sooooo rich in history. Brezje sounds like a beautiful place - and a place for miracles.

I've never heard of anyone (who visited that part of Europe) that hasn't been completely enchanted by the beauty of the landscape, both nearby lakes (Bled and Bohinj) and many other things that make the "Land On the Sunny Side of Alps" so special. Thank you, James!! :)
