Greenhouse Gases
Greenhouse Gases are gases that absorb and release infrared radiation (heat) into the atmosphere. The most common greenhouse gases are: methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and water vapor. Unlike other gases which reside in only certain layers of the atmosphere, greenhouse gases are mixed in with all the gases that make up the atmosphere. Because of this, greenhouse gases can be found in all the layers of the atmosphere. So, the denser (thicker) the atmosphere the more greenhouse gases you would find. Greenhouse gases function like insulators, trapping heat inside the atmosphere which is what causes the greenhouse effect. Many believe that these gases are causing the increase in global temperature. |
