First Appearance of Pajamas
In 1920s things were changing rapidly in the lingerie fashion. Price-wise, machine-made underwear - although made out of the same kinds of fine, luxury fabrics as the hand-made, high-end underclothes - became a lot more affordable, for the first time in known history. Fitness became fashionable in thirties, women were hungry for change and under that pressure, manufacturers of undergarments were forced to start producing smaller, lighter and better-fitting lingerie. New materials like nylon and elastan appeared at the same time and they proved to be a perfect match to fitted underclothes, in their lightest form yet. It doesn't come as surprise that night gowns evolved into narrower and more revealing, made of transparent fabrics. Oriental kimonos were also very popular. Their cuffs and collars were richly quilted. Dressing jackets, unfortunately, were short-lived because the new (lightning) star, pajama, took the stage over. ‘For years women have surreptitiously been stealing men's stuff... pyjamas are now by far the smartest form of negligee.' (Vogue, 1924) Pajamas in bright colors, pink and flesh tones, were made out of fancy fabrics like satin, cretonne, crepe, lame, velvet and more. Some PJ's stayed true to the Persian origins in metallic embroidery, coloring and print. For travelling, which also became higly fashionable in this era, the couture (dressmaking) houses were manufacturing complete bed-sets which matched lingerie sets. Vogue, in one of the issues agrees that ‘The smart woman travels with lovely lingerie and amusing pyjamas in her train.' At first, pajamas replaced the nightgowns because they were so much more comfortable and easy to take care for. But very quickly thereafter, the form of PJ became popular for sportswear, beachwear, evening wear and of course lounging. Until this day, popularity of pajamas never ceased because its form seems to be timeless. |
