Conifers Conifers are pretty easily recognized because of their narrow, needle-like leaves. They all have cones although they are sometimes not very obvious (like the ones of yew that look more like seeds). Many conifers grow in Christmas tree shape and have something called a central leader which is a prominent main stem or trunk. Sometimes these trees develop two central leaders. That can cause the tree to split in winter, with heavy overload of snow. To prevent splitting, trim one of the leaders when the tree is still young. Whorled-branching conifers grow branches in regular intervals along the central leader – like firs, pines, and spruces. Random-branching conifers grow branches anywhere along the main stem or trunk - arborvitae, giant redwood, hemlock, juniper, and sequoia.
